6 amazing health benefits of celery juice and why you should drink it

by May 14, 2019Healthy living

While a stalk of celery isn’t something overly sexy, I’ve been noticing quite a trend when it comes to celery juice.

My favourite juice bar here in Chiang Mai recently picked up on this trend and is now serving 100% celery juice too.

So, curious as I am, I was eager to find out what all this fuzz is about.

It turns out that it is quite healthy indeed! Celery is rich in Vitamin A and K, potassium, iron, sodium, and several more essential amino acids.

And I’ve personally always loved the taste of celery anyway, so that’s a double win.

But I know that not everyone is a big fan of the taste, so in that case you might want to skip this drink!

So now let’s dive into some of the great health benefits of drinking celery juice:

1. Celery juice kickstarts your digestion

The first noteworthy health benefit of celery juice is that it kickstarts your digestion. This is one of the reasons that it is recommended to drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

If you do it like that, it will help you to better digest other foods throughout the day and it will aid in gut health.

There are so many people struggling with feelings of bloating, indigestion, or acid-reflux. If you have symptoms like these, it would be definitely worth trying out drinking celery juice in the morning. It’s a great preparation for your stomach to properly digest the rest of your food that day. It will help to ease these uncomfortable feelings.

2. Celery juice helps to reduce bloating

As I just briefly mentioned already, celery juice can help to reduce the uncomfortable feeling of bloating. Celery is considered a natural diuretic and consists for the largest part of water. This both means that it is great if you want to flush out toxins and excess water from your body.

Also, when turning vegetables (and thus also celery) into a juice, you remove most of the fiber. What this means, is that it will be easier for your body to digest the food, while at the same time receiving all of the super healthy nutrients. This will help to reduce your feelings of bloating.

Well, who doesn’t want that? I know I surely do!

3. Celery juice hydrates your body

As celery consists for about 95% of water, it comes as no surprise that celery juice is a great hydrator!

This is my personal favourite benefit, because of where I live. For the past few weeks or months even it has been SO dry and excruciatingly hot. It’s nearly impossible to stay hydrated enough. But celery juice definitely helps with that!

But even if you live in a more temperate climate, it’s of course also great if you are struggling with drinking enough water throughout the day. It’s much more tasty than just water anyway! (Okay, I’ll admit, that doesn’t hold for everyone 😉 )

4. Celery juice helps with inflammation issues

Another health benefit of celery juice, is that it’s packed with antioxidants. This is great news if you are prone to inflammation issues such as acne, constipation, bloating, IBS, etcetera.

The two most important antioxidants in celery juice are “polyphenols” and “flavonoids”. They both have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

5. Celery juice helps to clear acne

If you’re like me and not blessed with a perfect skin, you’re going to like this benefit! A combination of the health benefits we just went over, actually also leads to this one: celery juice can help to clear acne. Sounds great, right?

It is the combination of hydration, flushing out toxins, and decreasing inflammation that could help to clear your skin from impurities. Yes please!

6. Celery juice nourishes your hair

The last benefit that I would like to share with you, is that celery juice helps to strengthen and hydrate your hair. Sounds like a big plus to me!

The reason that celery juice is so good for your hair, is because of the high water content and vitamin A.

Water obviously helps to hydrate your hair, but also your scalp. And Vitamin A helps to nourish the roots of your hairs, making them stronger and healthier from the core.

I can’t help but think about one of those exaggerated shampoo commercials. 😉 Who doesn’t want to look like that?!

How to make celery juice?

If you don’t want to go to a juice bar every time to drink it, of course you can make it yourself.

The best option would be to use a (slow)juicer. And really the only thing you need to do is put celery stalks in there, and enjoy your refreshing juice.

If you don’t have a juicing machine, you can also use a blender instead. However, you should definitely strain it afterwards to be able to enjoy a nice smooth drink.

When to drink celery juice?

Like I already mentioned earlier, it is recommended to drink celery juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. And then to at least wait 30 minutes before eating something. In that way, you will reap the most benefits.

You can of course also drink it at a later point in the day, but just make sure again to drink it about 30 minutes before a meal or snack.

The bottom line is to drink celery juice when your stomach is as empty as possible.

Final note:

So it seems that drinking celery juice has quite some amazing health benefits! And for those who like the taste just as much as I do, it’s a great treat to have anyway.
