7 reasons why so many people love running and you will too

Running is such a democratic sport and I am absolutely in love with it. If you aren’t yet or if you don’t know yet why it is such an amazing sport, please do read along and you will definitely understand why so many people around the world are obsessed with it and have it as their go-to exercise.

1. Freedom: run anytime, anywhere

The first amazing reason why running is such a beloved sport is that it provides a great amount of freedom. You can do it anytime you want. Have some time before work? After work? Or on a nice Sunday afternoon when lots of gyms are closed? You don’t have to worry about openings hours. The road is always there for you. You could even run in the middle of the night if you wanted to.

Running also gives you lots of freedom about where you can do it. You can run in your village, or city block and take a new route every time. You can even do it on a business trip or on holiday. Wherever you are in the world: just put on your running shoes and go.

2. Running is cheap

What also makes running amazing is that it’s cheap. The only thing that’s important to invest in -in my opinion- is a good pair of running shoes to lower the chance of injuries. And for women a good sports bra is also not a bad idea. Once you have that, you are good to go. Sure, you can also get all kinds of fancy sports clothes and gadgets, but they are not necessary. They just make it more comfortable and convenient. Another great reason is that you don’t need to pay membership fees. Using the road is free.

3. Running is easy

What I personally love about running, is that it’s so easy and natural to us. Anyone with a pair of working legs can do it: no matter your age, size or fitness level. With lots of other sports, you first have to go through a lot of training to get the techniques right. But running is just plain and simple. You can just wake up one day, and decide you want to go on your first run. It’s the most basic human form of exercise.

But even though it’s easy, surely there are lots of different fitness levels found among runners. It’s very important to never compare yourself to others. This is your journey, and yours alone. Everyone has their own history and story, making it impossible and unnecessary to compare. The only thing that matters is your own progress.

I’m an insanely slow runner, even though I’m competing on a professional level in Thai boxing. But it doesn’t bother me at all and I’m proud that I run anyway. It’s not my purpose or goal to run fast, it’s my goal to run at the pace that my body allows without injuring myself. So please keep that in mind, if you worry you’re not “good enough”. I’m telling you: you are, no matter what!

4: Running is great for busy people

One of my favourite things about running, is that it’s the perfect workout for busy people. You don’t have to commute to the gym, which saves you a ton of time. You can literally just walk out the door and start running. And it doesn’t have to be a long run to be a good run. Happy with a 10-minute run? Go for it! I personally always run for 30 minutes, right after I rushed myself from work to home to the gym, giving me just enough time to run 30 minutes as a warm-up before my Muay Thai training starts. You can make it as short or long as you want, depending on how busy you are. And depending on your fitness level.

5. You can run solo

What’s also great about running, is that you can do it all by yourself if you want. You don’t need to get picked by a team. And you’re not dependent on whether others will cancel and leave you hanging. You also don’t have to worry about deciding on a time and place that works for both you and your buddy. It’s totally up to you when and where you want to go for a run. You can just run solo with your own thoughts, or with your favourite music if it’s safe to do so.

6: Running is social

More of a social animal? Or you don’t like to go at it alone because of motivation? No problem! You can always join a running group. It’s a great way of meeting new people and to be part of a running community. Running can be quite “addictive” and it’s great to share that feeling with like-minded people. You can share tips and tricks or get to know about great running routes. And this isn’t limited to running groups. There are also tons of Facebook groups out there, where people come together to talk about their passion for running.

7: No run is ever the same

Non-runners might think that running is always the same and therefore perhaps boring. I believe it’s the complete opposite. Every run is different. Sure, you can always take the same route, but even then: you can mix it up in a ton of ways. You can do tempo runs, intervals, hill-work. Or even a mix of road- and trail work. Don’t care to take the same route twice? Don’t worry! You can take a different route every time you walk out that door. It’s completely up to you.
